Description:

Here for your consideration is a 1975 ELK Professional Echo Machine EM-4 in good condition! This one is in good working order but the repeats are a bit "warbly". Could be in need of a new tape but we thought that it sounded cool, almost chorus like, so we left it as is. Pots and record/playback heads have been thoroughly cleaned. A really fun, intersting, and vibey tape delay unit with multiple playback heads, and treble & bass tone controls.

The Elk EM-4 Professional Echo Machine is a vintage Japanese analog tape delay unit, often dated to the mid-1970s. It is known for its compact design and its use of the Sony RE-4 Endless Tape cartridge, the same format used in famous units like the Roland Space Echo.
  • Tape Transport: It utilizes a two-playback head system, which is fewer than some competitors but contributes to its smaller footprint.
  • Controls: The front panel typically includes:
    • Continuous Speed Control: Adjusts the delay time via a variable speed motor.
    • Mode Selector: A 5-position switch to choose different playback head configurations.
    • Echo Intensity/Repeat: Controls the feedback for multiple repeats.
    • Tone Controls: Dedicated bass and treble knobs for shaping the wet signal.
    • Standby Switch: Allows the user to disengage the pinch roller to save tape wear while keeping the unit on.
  • Inputs: Features multiple microphone inputs (typically 3 or 4) with individual volume controls and instrument inputs, allowing it to function as a preamp.
  • Power: Operates on 100V (standard Japanese voltage) but is often compatible with 117V-120V for use in North America without a transformer.
